![]() ![]() If there’s a word that best describes Cheetah, it’s “comfort.” The EP is draped in nostalgia: its title comes from a company that sold electronic instruments in the ‘80s, and the compositions bear the names of the devices on which they were composed. Case in point: his most recent EPs, 2016’s Cheetah and 2018’s Collapse, don’t break any new ground, yet they have a vibrancy that even his grand return Syro sometimes lacked. Nowadays, he seems less and less interested in that “important” stuff and more interested in enjoying himself. As those who have followed our series on James may have gathered, this isn’t entirely true James was always willing to engage with prevailing trends as they were, and his work has plenty of moments of levity to go along with the “important” stuff. He had pushed boundaries in the realm of electronic music for years, but in doing so he created the expectation that all of his work would be revolutionary, a grand statement on the future of the genre.
